What Is a Talent Agency, and What Do Agents Do?

You might be familiar with talent agents from outsized portrayals in TV shows and films like Entourage and Jerry Maguire. But do talent agents really spend all day yelling into a telephone and overworking their assistants? Not always.
In short, talent agents are often considered the gatekeepers of the entertainment industry. They have the connections and the knowledge to help their clients succeed, and they’re also responsible for protecting their clients’ reputation, making sure their talent is always presented in the best possible light.
The main job of a talent agency is to find work for its clients. Agents send talent on auditions, set up meetings and negotiate contracts. A good agent acts as a mentor, guiding a client’s career by offering advice and wisdom on everything from creative decisions to public relations and branding.
There are two main types of talent agencies:
- Large agencies handle high volumes of clients across various specialties, including theater, commercials and modeling.
- Boutique agencies are smaller and usually more specialized.
Whatever the size, the agency’s shared goal is to source talent that its agents are genuinely excited to represent, and get them booked. If clients aren’t succeeding, the agency isn’t succeeding, so you can be assured that everyone on the team is committed to helping your career move forward.
What Does a Talent Agency Do?
Beyond the occasional coffee meeting, talent agencies perform a wide variety of functions for their clients and for the agency as a whole. Key functions include:
- Building relationships with talent seekers, such as advertising agencies, production companies, casting directors, photographers and others
- Screening open & private casting calls and matching them with the right talent on the roster
- Collecting and approving audition materials from clients so you’re always ready before the big day
- Providing coaching support to help you create the perfect demo reel, prepare for auditions, refine your skills and keep your career on track
- Coordinating shoots and sessions between talent and producers
- Negotiating contracts, from payment to length to extensions to residuals, to help you land the best terms and rates while getting you paid for your work in a timely manner
Overall, your agency is there to provide you with opportunities, prepare you to nail them, and protect you all the way from audition to payment.
A Note on Commission
Talent agents typically work on commission, often around 10 to 20 percent of a client’s earnings. Given the scale of many entertainment contracts, this structure means an agent’s success is directly tied to yours, which is exactly the kind of alignment you want from your representation.

How Do Agencies Find Talent?
Talent scouts always keep their eyes open for potential clients, including actors, models, comedians and more. They attend open mic nights and theater productions, and they leverage their personal network for recommendations. When an agency has an open-submission policy, where interested parties submit themselves for consideration, scouts look there too for promising talent.
An agent, however, isn’t necessarily the first person to view your materials. Talent assistants, who may aspire to be agents themselves one day, help with day-to-day administrative work. In addition to prescreening submissions, they may manage an agent’s phone, inbox and calendar. Once signed, you’ll likely spend more time communicating with your agent’s assistant than with the agent directly, and that’s simply part of how the relationship works.
How Can I Work With An Agency?
When you sign with an agency, it’s smart to have a friendly relationship with many folks on staff. Your agent won’t be the only one submitting you for potential roles, so your demeanor with the full team matter.
When audition information becomes available for a project, your agency may email you the guidelines or flag the opportunity through an industry casting service. You may submit your audition directly or send several takes to your agent so they can help you choose the strongest one to move forward with.
After you secure a role, the agency will negotiate the contract on your behalf. If you also have a manager, they may sit in on these negotiations and offer feedback as well.
You’ll have regular check-ins with your agent or their assistant, whether that’s a weekly call or a monthly in-person meeting, where you’ll review the status of your recent submissions and discuss what you’d like to pursue next.
How Do I Find the Right Talent Agency for Me?
Narrow the scope. There are hundreds of agencies to consider, depending on where you’re located and what you’re looking for in representation. It may feel counterintuitive not to get your name in front of every single agency, but the goal is to find the best fit for you and your career, then put your energy into presenting yourself to those organizations specifically.
Even if you’ve heard good things about a particular agent, don’t chase a fit that doesn’t align with your goals and values. Some questions worth asking yourself:
- Will you be submitted for roles with intention, or randomly?
- If your assigned agent leaves, would you feel comfortable working with someone else at the firm?
- Does the agency’s size and culture match what you need?
- Do their values align with your career aspirations?
- Can you genuinely see yourself flourishing with them?
Start submitting. Once you’ve found an agency that has what you’re looking for, you can narrow down who you’d like to meet with and begin the process.
